The company was founded by Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute on 3 July 2005 as a “start-up” company within the state program for promotion of small innovative business in Russia (see news from 20 May 2005)

The aim of the Ioffe LED, Ltd. is the production of the optically pumped (OP) mid-IR LEDs covered by the authors patents. The main territories for distributing the OP LEDs are the US and the UK. The business company strategy is licensing of the technology to the US and UK collaborators and production and selling both OP LEDs and mid-IR phosphors to make an easy “going product” with minimum fabrication cost. The “know-how” of the authors as well as current techniques available in Russia and Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute RAS (like MOCVD, LPE, MBE and vacuum sputtering) make the achieving of the goal quite feasible. The plans are to have a company consisting of appr. 12 people having total sales volume not less than 640 000 USD/year within 4 years from the start of the project.
